Diamond Education Series Part 2 Diamond Cut and Clarity They Keys to Sparkle
What is Diamond Cut?
When it comes to a diamond’s brilliance, cut is arguably the most important factor. It refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted to maximize its ability to reflect light. A well-cut diamond will sparkle with brilliance, while a poorly cut diamond can appear dull, no matter how high its carat weight or clarity may be.
The cut of a diamond impacts its proportions, symmetry, and finish. Whether you choose a round, emerald, cushion, or any other shape, the quality of the cut determines how light interacts with the stone. Well-executed cuts allow light to enter the diamond and reflect back out through the top, creating that dazzling sparkle we all love.
What is Diamond Clarity?
Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions and blemishes within a diamond. Inclusions are tiny internal imperfections that occur naturally during the diamond’s formation deep within the Earth. Blemishes are surface imperfections. While these can be too small to see with the naked eye, they do affect a diamond’s overall appearance and value.
To assess clarity, gemologists use a 10x magnification loupe to closely examine the diamond. For even finer details, they may use a microscope to detect any internal flaws that may not be visible at first glance. These tools help determine the grade of clarity, based on the size, location, and visibility of any inclusions.
Clarity Grading Scale
Diamonds are graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). Here’s a quick overview of the clarity grades:
- Flawless (FL): No internal or external flaws visible under 10x magnification.
- Internally Flawless (IF): No internal flaws, but external blemishes may be present.
- Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 & VVS2): Inclusions are difficult to detect under 10x magnification.
- Very Slightly Included (VS1 & VS2): Inclusions are minor and may be seen with some effort under 10x magnification.
- Slightly Included (SI1 & SI2): Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification but are often invisible to the naked eye.
-
Included (I1, I2, I3): Inclusions are visible to the naked eye and may affect the durability of the diamond.
Why Cut & Clarity Matter
Both cut and clarity play crucial roles in the diamond's appearance. A diamond with an excellent cut will reflect light beautifully, regardless of its clarity grade, while a poorly cut diamond may lack brilliance, even if its clarity is nearly flawless. When selecting a diamond, it’s essential to consider both factors, as well as the color and carat weight, to achieve the perfect balance that suits your style and budget.
