Every August, the world gets a little greener, and we mean that in the most luminous, gem-lit way possible. Peridot, the birthstone of August, is one of nature's most joyful stones: a vivid yellow-green gem that has been treasured since the time of the Ancient Egyptians, who called it the "gem of the sun."
The Story Behind the Stone
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that forms in only one color. That signature lime-to-olive green gets its hue from iron within its mineral structure, olivine. Unlike most gems that form in the earth's crust, peridot is born deep in the mantle and carried to the surface through volcanic activity. It has even been found in meteorites, making it one of the most otherworldly gems in existence.
